Alassio and Riviera of flowers.

Alassio has its famous "Muretto" , decorated with colorful ceramic tiles that have the autographs of famous and immortalized stars from film and theater. Alassio is a small town on the Ligurian sea coast with a well protected and lovely sandy beach.

In the heart of the old town runs the "Budello" , a typical Ligurian alley. In the Middle Ages was the main street. Now is a traffic-free pedestrian zone with numerous boutiques and retailers ( approximately 2 km long lane parallel to the coastline) . Restaurants and organize evening programs for every taste.

History and legend

Known since Roman times, as it was on the transit road Via Julia Augusta, which runs today above the city. In1550 target of Arab raids, it is the recipient of a large number of tourists. Alassio, Sun City, lies with its Mediterranean houses between two capes, the Cape Mele towards France and the Cape of Santa Croce in the direction of Genoa. The first settlers in the area of Alassio belonged to the tribe at the Ingauner, probably fled after the victory of the Roman legions from Albenga. Even if there are no definite traces of a settlement in Roman times, we can assume that this wonderful place was inhabited for its closeness to Albenga. In the first millennium after Christ, some of the inhabitants of the hills were probably drawn in the plane in the vicinity of the beach, they founded Burgum Alaxi and later built a small church, St.. Ambrose (bishop of Milan) . It is historically proven that the residents on the island Gallinara Benedictine monks. They exercised over the inhabitants of Alassio religious and secular authority. In 1540 it was sold to the Republic of Genoa. Connected to the city it got a Podestà (the selected managers) and the title of city was conferred .




Once a seaside town with a large number of vessels and extensive trade with France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Sicily and Sardinia, with while a sizable boat fleet sailing in the Tyrrhenian Sea to fish coral . In the same period the Republic of Genoa fell and came from the Democratic Republic of Alassio Liguriens. In 1797 later of the Napoleonic troops occupied in 1815 part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

At the end of the 19th century Alassio was discovered for tourism , primarily through an English colony , led by the Hanbury family , which contributed decisively to the development of the city, for example through the creation of gardens in the hills and the construction of some typical English houses. The earliest origin of the name of the city is shrouded in legend. It tells of the legend of Adelasia, daughter of Otto I the Great , German Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 936 to 972nd.


The story goes, Adelasia Aleramo fell in love with a young cup-bearer in the imperial court, at which the emperor was not very happy. The loving couple fled from the misty regions of Germany, after, they had secretly married, and settled down after a difficult hiking under the Tirasso mountain .

They led a frugal existence as poor peasants, later to the Emperor moved to Italy to fight the Saracens. Aleramo bravely took on these expeditions with his sons in the ranks of part of the Imperial Army. By the action of the bishop of Albenga, Emperor Otto reconciled with his daughter and son-in law and presented them in imperial magnanimity the trademarks of Acqui, Monferrato, Savoy, including
